Islamic Retreat Press Release

First International Islamic Retreat in Trinidad and Tobago Official Press Release can be downloaded here.

Opening Address by Sadiq Baksh, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the First International Islamic Retreat held at the Barrackpore Islamic Centre, Trinindad on 1st October 2009.

Assalaamu Alaikum!

As we meet today on this very historic occasion, almost nothing positive has been written about Islam in China, Russia, the countries of the Former USSR, Africa, India, Europe, North America, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Caribbean, the Middle East and elsewhere. We as Muslims, and more-so non Muslims have little or no knowledge about the contributions and achievements made by Muslims in different endeavours such as exploration, science, mathematics, art, literature, medicine and other disciplines. We have to promote these achievements and make prominent the names of those who excelled so that the sense of pride of being a Muslim can once more be amongst us and that the present "negative" image of a Muslim as being portrayed in most western media and by non Muslim politicians can be neutralized. Our young people must have models from within Islam to emulate and to be stimulated by their contribution to the enrichment of civilization.

We as Muslims have to do this and not wait on others to promote our achievements. We are making a wonderful start on the road of recovery with this historic gathering of world students, scholars and leaders. I wish us all the best in that there will be action as a result of this Retreat and that it will not be another social gathering in which nothing happens after the Event.

The Lack of information on the History of Islam from Muslim scholars with an Islamic perspective needs to be addressed. This must include how Muslims live and contribute to countries around the World, a catalogue of the contribution to civilization by Muslims from the time of The Prophet-saw] to the present, a list of the names of prominent contributors to the various disciplines and the Islamic Umma over the centuries. Today many Imams speak about what is in the Quoran, that is fine but we need to expand and share with others the relevance of spirituality in everyday living as revealed in the holy Quoran.

The resolutions of this Retreat must have action and follow-up at our next retreat scheduled for Cape Town to monitor our progress. One other point which we may want to consider for discussion and development by the participating invitees during some of our free moments is the lack of information about the History of Islam, its growth and status in different countries of the world particularly from the perspective of Muslims scholars. I wish you well and assure you that our hard working local organizing team will ensure that you enjoy your stay with us. Assalaamu Alaikum!
